Wisdom and Knowledge
by Lisa Steele, FLM Executive Director
We welcomed a record-setting 104 students to our Por Los Niños Christian School this month to begin the 2024 school year, along with three new teachers and a new Head of School. We are thankful for the opportunity to not only teach these children academically but also to pour into them spiritually. Each month, their parents attend our Parents School, where we offer tools and resources for parenting and academics. We also pray with these families as we all work together to provide a better future for their children.
Five years ago we were a first through sixth grade school. We began in 2001 to serve the children who lived on our campus. Today, we have grown to offer Pre-K Montessori through ninth grade. We reach out to our community and invite them to learn with us. Our Montessori Pre-K and Kindergarten has a waiting list. Our school buildings are full, but so are our hearts. As Proverbs 24:5 says, “Wisdom brings strength, and knowledge gives power.” We are equipping the next generation to live a better life. We are equipping parents with ways to keep their family together in a healthy and safe way. We are telling and showing God’s love and care to these students and their families.
Almost 44% of children ages 3-17 are out of the school system in Honduras. Many have to leave school to work or watch younger siblings while their parents work. In many rural areas, there are no schools nearby. Even if there is a public school, children may not be allowed to attend because of abuse, pregnancy in pre-teen girls, exploitation, or child labor. Schools often do not offer a quality education, with 60% of children who attend school being below average or illiterate.
Our PLN Christian School offers a bilingual education that provides an integral way to reach families in the community academically and spiritually. We aim to create new strategies to become a model center and pioneer in our educational services, with Christ at the center of all we do.
As we strive to serve the educational needs of our community, we offer partial scholarships to students based on family income. Our team visits every home that requests a scholarship to accurately assess the need so that they can wisely distribute funds. As we grow in this wisdom, we see more families requesting a “hand up” instead of a “hand out.” Wisdom brings strength—to us and to those we serve.
Please keep our children, their families, and our teaching staff in your prayers. And please pray for wisdom as Family Life Missions looks to our future and sees a need for a larger, modern teaching facility. We fervently pray for God to show us the way and invite you to join us in the journey. In the coming months, you will hear more about our educational needs and how you can be a part of providing a strong education, both academically and spiritually, that will ensure a brighter future for the children and families that God has put in our path.
