Where Little Feet Run to Learn

What does it look like when children are excited to learn?

At Family Life Missions, it looks like little feet running joyfully into a classroom each morning, ready to begin their day with a devotional.

On our beautiful 8-acre campus in Catacamas, Honduras, our Montessori program—serving Pre-K through Kindergarten—has just begun its fifth year, and we continue to be amazed at the growth we see in these precious children every single day.

Intentionally designed with children in mind, our Montessori schoolhouse has everything at their level—small tables and chairs, low sinks, carefully prepared learning stations, and hands-on materials that invite discovery. As children move from one activity to another, they learn independence, responsibility, and confidence. They gather what they need, complete their work, and then return everything to its proper place.

In Montessori education, teachers are called “guides” because they gently guide children through the learning process rather than simply lecturing from the front of the room. The children actively participate in their own learning journey using the carefully prepared materials.

This approach is still relatively new in Honduras, but families in our community are embracing it enthusiastically. In fact, we have had a waiting list for our Montessori program every year!

Why Montessori?

Research continues to show strong benefits for children in Montessori classrooms, including academic growth, creativity, executive functioning skills, independence, and social-emotional development. A 2023 systematic review of 32 studies found that Montessori education showed positive effects on both academic and nonacademic outcomes, including executive function, creativity, and social skills. Additional studies have shown that Montessori students often demonstrate higher levels of creativity, well-being at school, and academic readiness.

Most importantly to us, these children LOVE learning.

It is a joy to watch children enter the classroom with smiles, excitement, curiosity, and confidence. And when they complete our Kindergarten program, they are well prepared to continue into first grade at our Por Los Niños Christian School.

As our program continues to grow, we know we will eventually need more space so that even more children can flourish in an environment where they are known, loved, encouraged, and equipped for the future.

We are grateful to every donor, teacher, parent, and supporter who is helping cultivate a love for learning in Honduras—one child at a time.

Everything we do at FLM centers on our mission: We partner with God to transform the lives of Honduran children and families through family preservation, education, child protection, and foster care.
